What is Tramadol?

What is Tramadol?

Pain is an unpleasant physical occurrence, which is caused by tissue damage, trauma, injury or related. The sensation of pain can vary in severity, where some patients are even left in complete debilitated states. An effective painkiller is therefore needed to treat such pain, without causing further complications or unwanted effects. This prevailing need led to tramadol being brought onto the online market place.

Tramadol 50 mg is a centrally-acting painkiller which was created in 1962 by a German pharmaceutical company. The medication, in short, is used to manage and treat moderate to intense pain and discomfort in any area of the body. Tramadol belongs to the category of opioid analgesics, which treats pain by changing the brain's response to this sensation.

The tablet is a synthetic opioid, which is considered relatively safer than natural-based opioids. Therefore, it can be used in adults, children over the age of 12 and the elderly population. Another beneficial component of tramadol is that these age groups can use the medication on the lowest effective dose.

After 15 years on trial, the medication first went on sale in 1977 under the name Tramal. Ultram, the more recent brand name of tramadol, was approved in 1994 and is also open for medicinal use. The impressive tolerance, dependence and low-risk profile of tramadol original and the generic, have caught the attention of medical professionals and pain sufferers alike.

A study has even proven that tramadol is a preferred opioid analgesic, compared to various other opioids such as hydrocodone.

How Does Ultram Work?

Tramadol's pathway in the body is just like other opioids, making it an effective pain killer. However, the medication is also known to have an inhibitory effect on the neurotransmitters, serotonin and norepinephrine. This means that tramadol is classified as a SNRI medication. Its active ingredient, tramadol hydrochloride, plays a considerable role in the tablet's opioid activity.

Experts have confirmed that tramadol 50 mg exerts its pain-relieving properties by performing two corresponding processes when ingested. These two processes are the weak attachment to opioid receptors and the inhibition of norepinephrine and serotonin. Together, these processes produce impressive levels of pain relief, with a lowered risk of adverse effects.

Although the attachment affinity to opioid receptors is significantly weaker than other opioids, tramadol still produces potent effects. This weak affinity is one of the reasons behind tramadol's minimal side effects and tolerance risk.

The secretion levels of the neurotransmitters are higher with tramadol, which allows the brain and nervous system to calm down, resulting in a general CNS depression. This is especially advantageous in patients who have a problem falling asleep due to their pain.

Tramadol can also be safely paired with additional pain relievers, like NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). These would include ibuprofen, aspirin, naproxen and others.

What is Tramadol Used For?

Finding the perfect pain treatment is important in pain control, as untreated pain can bring physical symptoms such as fever and nausea. The use of tramadol 50 mg has brought relief to all patients with different types of pain, without posing severe side effects. The medication is referred to as a Step 2 on the World Health Organization (WHO) pain ladder and has one-tenth of the strength of morphine.

Tramadol can be used in the treatment of the following:

  • Acute or chronic pain
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Nerve pain
  • Post-operation pain
  • Back pain (acute or chronic)
  • Pain from cancer
  • Nociceptive pain

The most common pain is nociceptive pain (resulting from physical damage or potential damage to the body). This type of pain can affect anyone of any age, resulting from injuries or other causes. Using tramadol will reduce the number of times patients visit the emergency room, saving them money on hospital costs.

The FDA considers tramadol 50 mg a schedule IV controlled substance. This means that the medication cannot be given to patients who do not have a proper diagnosis. It is categorised as a controlled substance, due to its misuse by some who ignore usage and dosage instructions.

Patients who follow dosage guidelines and instructions can use this treatment without the risk of dependency.

How do I take Tramadol?

How do I take Tramadol?

It is vital to follow the necessary instructions when starting the tramadol treatment plan. These pointers help patients experience a first-rate pain-relieving process without additional issues.

Patients who take tramadol must follow these guidelines:

  • Take the pain tablet orally / by mouth.
  • Tramadol 50 mg tablet should not be crushed, chewed or broken when ingested. This may affect the beneficial attributes of the medication.
  • Drink plenty of water when taking the tablet. This will aid in the absorption of the active ingredient and jump-start its beneficial effects.
  • The tablet must not be taken with fizzy drinks, energy drinks or alcohol.
  • Do not double dose if you have missed a dose of tramadol. Taking two doses at the same time may hinder the tablet's therapeutic effects.
  • Do not abruptly discontinue the use of tramadol. A proper tapering off process must be followed to avoid unpleasant withdrawal symptoms.
  • Patients must beware of possible interactions tramadol may have with other medications, and avoid using these medications with this treatment.

Can You Take Paracetamol with Tramadol?

Tramadol painkillers are proven to be safe for use with certain other medications like Panadol. These combinations provide an elevated level of pain relief for some, where paracetamol does not offer enough or longer-lasting pain relief. In fact, tramadol and paracetamol is a typical combination used by patients.

Tramadol 50 mg and paracetamol is essentially a fixed-dose combination treatment indicated for the symptomatic management of various levels of pain. This combination is highly effective in treating severe pain and maintaining a proper level of pain control.

Both these medications are effective painkillers with differing compositions and characteristics that work well together. These complementary pathways can achieve pain relief that is superior to that of the individual medications, while also decreasing or minimising the occurrence of side effects. Paracetamol can also reduce fever, which is commonly associated with pain.

According to an article posted by Research Gate reviewing this combination, a fixed-dose of tramadol and paracetamol is fast-acting while providing a more extended period of relief. It is also well-tolerated by patients who use the combination, as side effects are significantly reduced.

The tramadol paracetamol combination is effective in providing pain relief for:

  • Postoperative pain
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Diabetic peripheral neuropathy
  • Migraines

Furthermore, it was shown that this combination provided a higher analgesic efficacy than paracetamol alone, ibuprofen and the fixed-dose combinations of codeine/paracetamol/ibuprofen, codeine/paracetamol and hydrocodone/paracetamol.

Dear Steve, Although I found your article most interesting and do not disagree with a word you said in regards to Tramadol and its suitability as a pain relief medication, I do have one small point of contention. Personally I find hydrocodone a perfectly effective pain killer and prefer it over Tramadol. Pam Primrose
